Upon relocating to a new city two years after moving in with my mother, we transitioned from a house with a garden to a flat with limited outdoor space. This adjustment posed challenges for both of us, as we had to adapt to a different living environment. While I was saddened by the necessity of leaving behind our previous home, I recognized the importance of mobility in terms of my career but also the the value of the continued companionship with mom.
Establishing a new routine took time, during which I admired my mother's resilience and adaptability. My intention has always been to support her when living by herself was no longer an option and I am grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that role. Reflecting on the situation, I acknowledge the importance of being specific when I praying, because although my prayer was to care of mom, was never specific with regards to the place where it should be. I never intended for the care to be away from mom's house but reality proved otherwise.
At her home, mom enjoyed spending time in the garden, engaging in gardening activities that provided both physical exercise and mental stimulation. However, in our current living space with limited outdoor area, we explored alternative mobility solutions to promote circulation and overall well-being. While we continue to incorporate potted plants into our living space, additional measures were necessary to address mobility challenges.
We experimented with various exercises aimed at improving circulation, such as toe wiggling and ankle rotations, as well as chair-based exercises designed for seniors. Given Mom's susceptibility to leg ulcers due to her chronic illness, daily leg examinations and massages are essential components of our routine. Prompt identification and treatment of any scratches or discolorations are crucial to prevent complications associated with slow-healing wounds.
The focus on leg care aligns with our goal of enhancing Mom's quality of life by addressing her physical, psycho-social, and spiritual needs. Our efforts aim to ensure her comfort and well-being, recognizing the importance of attentive care and ongoing support.
